And if I produced serial paintings of Volvos ? …
A letter from the Campbell Soup Company to Andy Warhol (1964). In the personal collection of photog and Warhol associate Billy Name.
Ok, I know I’ve taken the piss out of the ArtScience Museum on the pages of this blog before, but the travelling Warhol retrospective which opened there over the weekend, 15 Minutes Eternal, is a coherent, well-put together effort. (The gallery design got a bit cheesy in bits though …)
Generally I find ASM “exhibitions” to be dismal affairs – too many damned replicas – but this one’s worth the 15 bucks for the price of admission. Or 13, if you’re a Singapore resident.
No photography allowed though, boo, so here’s a little-known bit of Warholalia: a letter from the Campbell Soup Company to the artist (above), gushing about how much they admire his work and offering him a couple of cases of his favourite tomato flavour.
Here’s a lesson for all aspiring artists: start painting Volvos, or luxurious condominium developments, or De Beers diamonds – and keep yer fingers crossed.
OK, you’ve convinced me. I’ll go. $15? When did they reduce admission?

A while back I think. The show was good, but if you’ve already been to the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh though, I’d save the dineros ..

BTW, did you see your blog namechecked in ST earlier this week?

Don’t get me started. The writer apologized, which I appreciated, but unfortunately what I wanted was an explanation. The one she offered was half-hearted at best, qualified with phrases like “for some reason”. (Imagine running someone over, even if by accident, and saying it happened “for some reason”.) That I didn’t appreciate, and she was accordingly apprised of the fact.

Also, I’m tired of the fuzzy-minded mischaracterizing what I do. Even after I noted in my initial e-mail to Ms. Vasko that all that’s on this blog are reviews of art exhibitions – something she could’ve just cut and pasted – she insisted on labelling me a “cultural blogger.”
It’s like calling acts of terrorism “geo-political interventions.”
